COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A Columbus man who was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after a shooting on River Rd.
32-year-old Akeem Banner made his first appearance in court following the Oct. 7 shooting.
Banner pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated assault, battery and gun violence.
According to police, Banner shot Rodney Williams multiple times in the left arm and back while inside his truck at Wilson Homes Apartments.
Williams began dating the mother of Banner’s child before Banner allegedly approached the truck Williams and the girlfriend were sitting in when the shooting occurred.
Banner allegedly asked his ex-girlfriend who she was in the truck with. When she answered, he yelled, “If you want her, you can have her,” while reaching for his weapon before shots rang out.
The girlfriend identified Banners as the father of her child and the man who shot Williams after witnessing the incident.
While Williams was on the way to the home prior to the shooting, he noticed several Columbus police officers in a particular area.
After Williams was shot, he sped off to that area where he saw the police officers earlier.
Williams was then taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries.
Banner’s case was bound over to Superior Court where his bond will be determined.
