COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A man accused of a Columbus murder has made his first appearance in court.
At his preliminary Recorder’s Court hearing, and 24-year-old Brenton Rhasheem Davis plead not guilty.
He is charged with the murder of Tommy Jones at a Walgreen’s on Wynnton Rd. on Nov. 21.
Police say the shooting stemmed from a purchase of a gun.
They say they found Jones' cell phone which revealed text messages between him and Davis.
Davis was allegedly selling Jones a gun. The pair also spent a few minutes inside the Walgreen’s before shots were fired outside the store.
Court testimony revealed Jones ran away from Davis with a big in his hand, which is when Davis shot him several times in the back and legs. Investigators say they have surveillance video that can prove this.
“One thing that concerned me based on the detective’s testimony is that they only have a portion of the tape that doesn’t show the beginning to the end. So, I’m not sure if it’s a portion from the Walgreen’s then there’s a portion from surrounding businesses,” says defense attorney Stacey Jackson.
Witnesses say they saw Davis pick up the bag after shooting Jones and leaving the scene.
Davis is being held without bond.
