Former pair of Best Rangers reclaim throne after annual Ft. Benning competition

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - A former pair of Best Rangers have reclaimed the throne after Fort Benning’s annual Best Ranger Competition.

Capt. John Bergman and Capt. Michael Rose, who represented the 101st Airborne Division form Fort Campbell, Kentucky, finished in first place ahead of 53 other teams who began the competition on Apr. 12.

The pair becomes the first team to ever win together a second time. The captains competed together in 2014, representing the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Capt. Rose also becomes the first ranger to win for a third time after earning his second win in 2017 alongside Master Sgt. Josh Horsager of the 75th Ranger Regiment.

The competition began on at 6:00 a.m. on Apr. 12. Over the next two days, the 54 teams were whittled to just 16 teams allowed to complete the third and final day, Apr. 14.

“If you train hard, you put in the work now, you put in the sweat, you put in the effort now, when the time comes you’re going to be successful, and you’re going to achieve what you need,” said Rose. “You’re going to bring everyone home. That’s what I’m going to take away from the competition. That’s what I’m going to take forward as company commander.”
