SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Paula Deen is quite a ham.
The celebrity chef worked with Smithfield Foods on Wednesday to donate 25,000 pounds of ham to America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia. The Savannah resident pitched hams out of the back of a truck to onlookers and supporters gathered as part of Smithfield's Helping Hungry Homes initiative.
"This is my favorite part, y'all," Deen said. "Tossin' hams."
Like many food banks, the coastal Georgia facility has seen a sharp rise in the number of families needing help. Executive director Mary Jane Crouch said demand is up 26% this year.
Deen, known for her Southern cuisine, has been a celebrity spokeswoman for Smithfield foods for two years.
