FORT MITCHELL (WTVM) - For many, Memorial Day means hitting the road and taking a long weekend, but the Fort Mitchell National Cemetery is doing what the day was created for and remembering veterans.

It's easy to forget the meaning of Memorial Day, but a group of veterans and their families are making sure to remember those who have served us at the annual Ft. Mitchell Cemetery Memorial Service.

President of the Fort Mitchell Support Committee Harold Williford told News Leader Nine, "We are honoring the veterans, alive and deceased, and their spouses."

"You guys think about what's going on in Iraq and Afghanistan and we're losing soldiers every day. A chance to come out here and honor the soldiers that have passed is greater than anything else," added Eugene Benford, Commander of Opelika 95.

The Fort Benning Rifle Squad offered a salute, the Fort Mitchell Support Committee held a parade of wreaths, and Lt. General Carmen Cavezza acted as the event's guest speaker.

Benford said, "Families feel great to see somebody else honor their children or their loved ones."

Williford agreed, saying, "It's important for the community to always remember that veterans are always fighting and dying to keep this nation free, that's why we come here, to honor them."

Event organizers say they were pleased to see so many community members show up on this holiday weekend to show support for the veterans.

"A lot of people here means a lot, but I'd love to see a lot more. I want to see the community leaders come out to events like this and show more respect for it, but I'm glad to see the crowd we have. And next year, I hope to see an even bigger crowd," Benford told News Leader Nine.

Williford said, "It shows great support and lets me know as a veteran myself that the community cares about their loved ones that gave their utmost to them and for those who are overseas now guarding our freedom."
