LEE COUNTY, Ala. (WTVM) - According to the Lee County Republican party chairman, Wednesday's recount of the republican primary for governor helped Tim James by giving him 15 more votes over second place finisher Robert Bentley.
James requested a state wide recount after finishing 167 votes behind Robert Bentley in the June 1st Republican primary for governor. James says the recount could give him enough votes to put him in the July 13th runoff against first place finisher, Bradley Byrne. His campaign is spending more than $200,000 on the recount process.
Thursday morning, Rod Herring, the chairmen of the Lee County Republican party, shared the final numbers with News Leader 9.
Bradley Byrne revived 4,994 votes in Lee County during the Alabama republican primary for governor. His recount total was 5,008. Meaning Byrne picked up 14 additional votes in the recount.
Tim James was given 3,118 votes on election night in Lee County. The recount had him at 3,142 votes. That's a plus 24 difference.
Second place finisher, Robert Bentley received 2,018 votes on election night. The recount gave him 2,027 votes, giving him a plus 9 difference.
Herring says according to reports from other counties, Lee County is one of a few counties where the recount has actually helped Tim James. Alabama's remaining counties will recount ballots Thursday. Final numbers of the statewide recount could be posted Friday. However, according to the Associated Press, the recount is not expected to thrust James into the July runoff with Byrne.
