QUITMAN COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -  Legal proceedings are underway in Quitman County to recall the Chairman of the County Commission.

A group of citizens petitioned the court in an effort to oust Richard Morris, claiming he wrongfully asked a Grand Jury to investigate the Sheriff's Office after last summer's small-scale riot in Georgetown, stemming from an investigative traffic stop.

Citizens say Morris also abused his power by dictating budgets.

Richard Morris says he was simply doing his job, responding to community concerns over the riot and trying to manage the county's spending.

"That's what we tried to argue. A recall is normally about some action that I took personally at my own initiative. That was not the case. I was simply the chairman. The motions were made and adopted by the County Commission, not by me personally," Morris told WTVM.

Next up, the Director of Quitman County's Board of Elections says he must issue a recall petition and then, the citizens have 30 days to get close to 500 signatures supporting the move.

If they get the signatures, a special recall election will be held.
