COLUMBUS, GA – Columbus Police tell News Leader 9 a man was fatally shot in an area off 1st Avenue in downtown Columbus.

It is the city's 7th murder of the year.

Officers were called to the Johnston Mill Loft Apartments around 10:30 Friday morning in reference to a shooting.

When they arrived, officers found 33-year-old Brian Alexander Brown on the floor of one of the apartments with a gunshot wound to the head.

Brown was rushed to the Columbus Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigators say Brown had an altercation with two men in the breezeway of the apartments, went inside afterwards and shut the door. As he was standing against the door, officials say shots were fired from the outside and one of the bullets hit Brown in the head.

Now, police are searching for the suspects who they describe as two black men, one wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and one wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.

At this point, Columbus detectives say there is no known motive and nothing was taken from the victim in the fatal shooting.

Meanwhile, Brian Brown's body has been sent for an autopsy.

News Leader 9 is following this story. We'll have the latest information as soon as it becomes available.
