LEE COUNTY, AL - A female passenger that was involved in a two-vehicle accident on Saturday has died from her injuries.
Twenty-three-year-old Amanda Polston, who listed an Auburn address, was declared brain dead Sunday at 9:50 AM from multiple blunt force injuries she sustained in a motor vehicle accident Saturday morning around 11:30 AM on Shug Jordan Parkway near the Wire road intersection.
Polston was a front seat passenger in a Pontiac Sunfire that was driven by 22-year-old Travis Bishop, who also listed and Auburn address, that was traveling east on Shug Jordan when he apparently veered into the oncoming lane of traffic and struck a Toyota Sequoia almost head-on. Polston had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Auburn Fire Department.
East Alabama Medical Center EMS as well as two helicopters responded to the scene. As Polston was about to be loaded onto the Lifesaver helicopter, her condition declined rapidly and she had to be taken by ground ambulance to EAMC for stabilization.
She was taken to emergency surgery shortly after arrival at EAMC and was placed in the intensive care unit. Her condition did not improve and she was declared brain dead at 9:50 AM Sunday morning.
Bishop was airlifted by AirEvac to the Columbus Regional Hospital in critical condition. He remains in the hospital there.
The driver and passengers of the Sequoia were transported to EAMC for treatment and their condition is unknown at this time, but it is believed that their injuries were non-life threatening. The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Auburn Police Department and the Lee County Coroner's Office.
