COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Veteran's Day is just a few days away, but already a community group is finding a way to give back to those who served our country.

The Disabled American Veterans are known for assisting veterans all over the country, but when the Columbus chapter heard someone needed help in their own backyard they made sure the problem was fixed.

The Service Officer for the Disabled American Veterans, Stuart Hansen explained, "What we're doing here is building a ramp for John Sicinski who is an 89 year old disabled veteran."

Sicinski added, "They're helping me out with my problem of getting my wheelchair out of the house."

When fellow members of the Disabled American Veterans heard that one of their own was having problems, they jumped at the chance to help him.

Hansen told News Leader Nine, "He couldn't get out of his front or side door because of his condition so we built a ramp, we got the donations we needed, the materials, and the labor we asked for and we're happy to do it."

"I came out here with a couple other members and we were trying to make designs but we could not. We just could not build this ramp without professional help," said project coordinator David Jones.

And that's where Columbus contractor Jim Lester came in, "I'm a veteran so when or if I get to be 90 years old I may have to have somebody build me a ramp and I'd appreciate it then. It's all a part of paying back to the community."

Sicinski said their hard work really paid off, "I appreciate the help and I want to thank them for it."

The Muscogee County Disabled American Veterans Chapter does several projects throughout the year, such as outreach and other volunteer programs.

Building this ramp is a nice reminder to give back to those who served the country, not just on Veteran's Day.
