PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - In the last meeting of the year for Russell County Commissioners, a lot of ground was covered. There were some new plans put in place that will bear results in the new year.
First on the agenda in Russell County Commission was a general update for the renovations on the Judicial Center. Architects from Hecht-Burdeshaw said that all the plans for the new building are on track. They also took the time to remind the public that they would be happy to give tours of the facility, but it is a hard hat zone and residents need prior approval before walking around.
The Homeland Security Department presented bid results for GPS tracking systems for county school buses. The bids for the project opened on December 14th and the lowest bidder was approved Wednesday. The tracking system will be a 100 percent reimbursement as part of an Alabama state grant.
The final, and most controversial, item on the agenda is the proposed landfill. It's a topic that several residents have been speaking out against it. The Russell County Commission voted to hold a public hearing for the issue, giving everyone a chance to speak out against or in favor of the landfill project. That meeting was originally scheduled for January 10th, but has now been changed to February 7th. It will start at 5 o'clock, right before the Russell County Commission work session.
