Did Aide Call Voters Stupid?

An aide to Alabama Gov. Bob Riley is kicking up controversy with a comment made in a Philadelphia newspaper.

Policy Director David Stewart was quoted as saying there's so much opposition to the Governor's tax plan because "the people of Alabama are too stupid to know better."

Many are outraged by the comment. Emily Landingham of Auburn told News Leader 9, "That makes me sick. As an Alabamian, I'm proud of our state. And him calling us stupid, that's ridiculous."

The comment was made as the Riley staff tours the state, campaigning for a billion-dollar tax and accountability package.  But many say this remark won't affect how they vote in this high-stakes debate.

Word from the Governor's office is that Stewart doesn't recall making the remark, and will not be fired. He has apologized to Riley, as well as to anyone in Alabama who is offended.

But the Christian Coalition of Alabama, which has been Riley's leading opposition to the tax hike, is not accepting an apology.  It's demanding Stewart be fired.

The Inquirer reporter apparently visited our area to prepare the story, as it includes quotes from people in Eufaula and Hatchechubbee.
