Governor Sonny Perdue says he wants state officials to consider adding a minimum SAT score to the requirement Georgia high school students must meet to qualify for the hope scholarship. Perdue says that Georgia might not rank last in the nation in average SAT scores if students had a better incentive to perform well on the standardized test.
The only current requirement to earn a hope scholarship is a B grade average. Perdue said other states with merit-based scholarships include a standardized test minimum. Perdue said combining a minimum sat score with the required B average would help boost Georgia's low national education rankings.
Critics have argued that grades are inflated at some Georgia schools to allow students to qualify for hope with a B average.
