COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -
If you've driven down Macon Road lately then you've probably
notice the new City Service Center & Natatorium start to take shape.
"You can see the office building frame as well as the parking
deck and we are doing foundations for the natatorium," says project manager
Wes Kelley.
The $32.5 million project is expected to be finished in May of next
year. The time cannot come soon enough for aquatic fanatics like Chad Day who
works at Columbus State's new swimming facility.
Day says the new swimming pools at CSU's new state-of-the-art
Student Rec Center brings in hundreds of students daily.
"The pool has been a huge benefit to the students because
most of our students come from a limited swimming background and we offer free
swim lessons to all students. We also offer swim lessons for academic course so
our pools stay pretty full throughout the day," Day said.
The Natatorium will have 8 lanes for Olympic style swimming. The
new pools and the City Service center is all funded by the 1999 special purpose
local option sales tax, the 2008 local option sales tax and bond proceeds from
the city.
Site project manager Kelley says they are hoping construction will
continue to be smooth sailing from this point forward.
"It's been really nice the weather has cooperated as of
recently and we've got some good dirt work out here," Kelley said
Steel beams of the City Service Center have now been put in place
and ground work for the natatorium has also begun. But still it will be a year
before it is ready for everyone to use and people like Chad Day and other
avid swimmers will have to continue using the pool at CSU for now.
