Possible Tornado Damages Garage

Severe weather is moving across the Columbus area, prompting numerous tornado warnings.  The weather was serious enough that Chattahoochee Valley Community College called off some Wednesday evening classes.

Several callers to WTVM reported seeing funnel clouds in east Phenix City and near Lake Oliver Wednesday afternoon.  News Leader 9 has confirmed through the Macon County Sheriff's Department a possible tornado touched down on County Road 199, and did some damage to Miller's Garage.

We were able to speak with Ray Miller, the owner of the business.  He says his garage was badly damaged, but his home is OK.  Miller also reports the strong winds picked a child up off the ground, but the child is all right and is recovering at the hospital.

Elsewhere, officers report several mobile homes have storm damage along Lee Road 158 in Opelika.  Power lines and trees are down in that area.

The turbulent sky may have distracted drivers on the J.R. Allen Parkway.  A collision at the intersection of U.S. 80 and U.S. 280 in Phenix City Wednesday evening reportedly backed up traffic westbound.

Stay tuned to WTVM News Leader 9 for continuing live severe weather updates, with bulletins at once.
