COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The mother of a Columbus teen is accused of forcing her daughter to drink turpentine, trying to induce an abortion.  The 16-year-old is now in protective custody.

The teen's mother, 44-year-old Rozelletta Blackshire, is charged with criminal abortion and first degree cruelty to children.  Also, two cousins, Shonda Blackshire and Monica Johnson, are also under arrest.

"The mother and two cousins were involved in forcibly having her to take a quantity of turpentine on two different occasions explaining to her that their help would help kill her baby and do away with her pregnancy," said Lt. J.R. McMichael, Columbus Police Department.

Detectives say the teen was forced to take turpentine mixed with sugar to chase off the jarring taste.  Police were called to investigate after the girl told her school counselor that her mother made her drink the turpentine.

Relatives may have tried to terminate the pregnancy after discovering the father of the baby is over 30-years-old.

Because the girl is 16, the age of consent, no statutory rape charges were filed.  Unfortunately, one local doctor says too often she sees patients who have used a home remedy like turpentine to abort a pregnancy.  "It is a known substance that has been used in abortions.  The problem it will cause an abortion and it will cause you to die.  However, for the fetus to die the mother has to be dead or near death," said Dr. Karen Suart, Women Care Clinic.

The teenager involved in the case was lucky.  Initial exams showed no injury to her or the fetus.  She is now carrying out her pregnancy in protective custody.
