The current University of Houston president and chancellor continued his public forums at Auburn University Thursday morning. He's the only candidate to replace Dr. Ed Richardson for Auburn's top spot. It was standing room only as students, faculty members and the public asked Dr. Jay Gogue his positions on topics affecting the university.

"I'm very impressed with Doctor Gogue. I think he's going to bring a very positive attitude to Auburn. He certainly brings a much different perspective on some things," said Chandler Harris, a freshman at AU.

Auburn has been working to improve its strategic plan for diversity. Gogue comes from the University of Houston, one of the most diverse schools in America.

"He recognizes that diversity is defined in different ways, and we need to understand that variability," said Donna Sollie, assistant provost of Women's Initiatives with the Department of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.

Gogue believes universities should be more involved with international studies.

"Going international will help students, like when he said with hotel management and the Bahamas. I think that will help students because the Bahamas is a very big tourist attraction," said Britney Kirksey, an AU freshman.

One universal comment is how well Gogue responds to people.

"He's very engaging, very approachable. I think people will enjoy having the chance to talk with him and learn from him," Sollie said.

"I want to make sure my voice is heard, as do my classmates. I certainly look forward to that," Harris added.

Harris may get that chance. Auburn's Board of Trustees meets at 4:00 p.m. CDT Thursday. They could vote whether or not to hire Gogue as the next president.
