Missile Attack Kills Local Civilian Contractor In Iraq

Thirty-eight year-old Carolyn Edwards, a civilian contractor from Montezuma, Georgia, died last week in a missile attack in Baghdad.  Now her family and friends are preparing to say their final goodbyes.  Relatives of Carolyn Edwards say she had a personality that lit up a room.

"She was a very outgoing person, and she loved to travel," said Gloria Thomas, Edwards's aunt. "I don't understand how she could just get in a car and drive anywhere she wanted to go. But she would find her way and go."

It was that desire to see the world that led Edwards to Iraq, from her small hometown of Montezuma, Georgia. She spent the last year working as a civilian contractor for KBR Industries, a subsidiary of Halliburton, until a missile attack took her life.

"She was standing in a doorway, as we understand, and the rocket came into the building, and she got some debris from the rocket. And they tried to revive her, but they couldn't," said Queen Minter, another aunt of Carolyn Edwards.

Edwards's body was brought back to Montezuma on Sunday, the same day she was planning to return home for good. Despite the dangers of working in a war zone, relatives say she enjoyed doing her job.

"She wanted to serve her country. She wanted to be of service, and she enjoyed doing it, because she loved people," Minter explained.

Edwards leaves behind an 18-year-old son. The family says they will come together to help him get through this tough time.

"We have storms in our life right now, but it's going to get better. We may weep at night, but joy will come in the morning. We will get over it," Thomas said.

Funeral services for Carolyn Edwards are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Friday, at the Saint Paul AME church in Oglethorpe, Georgia.
