Valley Prepares Public Memorial For Fallen Soldier

The City of Valley, Alabama, is preparing to lay a local Army hero to rest. Sergeant Brandon Hadaway was killed in Afghanistan one week ago.  He was one of five soldiers killed when his helicopter was shot down. His body arrived home Wednesday, and Valley's leaders want residents to have an opportunity to pay their respects.

Valley officials are taking time to remember Sgt. Hadaway. A public visitation was held thursday night at the Valley Sportsplex Community Center.

"A military honor guard will be with his remains the entire time and paying honor to him. It's an opportunity for the citizens to come out and do the same," said Tim Bryan, Valley city administrator.

Friday afternoon at 5:00 EDT, a public memorial will be held at the Community Center. Friday will also be a local flag day in Sgt. Hadaway's honor.

"We want everyone who has property to display an American flag on their property. If they have a vehicle, display it properly on the vehicle. We'll certainly have the flags out all day Friday to honor these brave men and women," Bryan said.

Sergeant Hadaway graduated from Valley High School, and he was on his third tour of duty when his Chinook helicopter was brought down by enemy fire. He is survived by a wife and three sons.

"We want the community to become involved and show his family and the rest of the world that Valley, Alabama, supports its soldiers," said Bryan.

The funeral for Sgt. Hadaway will remain private, but the two services will be open to everyone. The memorial service will feature several state and local dignitaries, including new Alabama Adjutant General, Major General John White.
