Jordan-Hare Holding Cell Awaits Stadium Alcohol Violators

August 30, 2007

It's time once again for fans to fill stadiums all around the college football world, and that means tailgating and parties as well. Auburn police have a special place for those wanting to bring the party into the stadium.

Auburn University's football season kicks off again this weekend, and the one place you don't want to see the game is from the holding cell. But that's exactly where you could wind up if you bring alcohol into Jordan-Hare Stadium.

"It's not permitted. That's the short answer," said Jim Hardin, senior program advisor in the Office of the Dean of Students.

Having alcohol inside the stadium will cost you, especially if you're a student.

"They are ejected from the game and can face some disciplinary action, such as a hold being put on their records, going to an alcohol awareness class, that sort of thing. If there are multiple violations, then they can lose their season tickets, or lose it permanently," Hardin said.

Get too drunk and rowdy, and you could find yourself under the end zone and sitting on the bench.

"The people that are incarcerated here will be held here temporarily. From here they'll be transported over to the Lee County Justice Center. From there they'll make bond," said Capt. Tom Stofer, Auburn Police Department.

While in the cell, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the game if you peer under the stands. However, it's certainly not the best seat in the house.

"We want any fan to see the game from the stadium seats and not from this location here," Stofer said.

Stofer said the positive side is most everyone tends to behave.

"We use it just about every game, but you'd be surprised. We have some really good fans here in Auburn. We don't make a whole lot of arrests during any one particular game," said Stofer.

Three of Auburn's first home games are at night, and that's when alcohol becomes a bigger problem. If you want to stay inside and enjoy the game, the best thing to do is leave the drinks outside the gates.
