SHILOH, Ga (WTVM)-- Family and friends say goodbye to a fallen Columbus soldier, who died in Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant Gregory Elam died December 11th, from a non-combat related illness.

Family and friends gathered at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church to remember Staff Sergeant Elam.

For many, Elam was fellow soldier, for others he was a a shoulder to cry on, and an ear to listen.

"As a friend, he was a person you could always go to. He's a leader as a soldier, so you could go to him for anything military wise, and also fellowship wise," said Staff Sgt. Patrick Curley, from 1207 U.S. Army Hospital.

After graduating from Spencer High School in Columbus, Elam joined the Army where he received more than a dozen medals and decorations, including the Bronze Star.

His closest friends say he was a military man at heart, but his love for people was what really made him stand out.

"Greg was the type of guy, that he met no strangers. Greg was soft-spoken but he left an impact. When you met him, he just grew on you, he was just that type of person," said Rev. Willie Jones, a family friend.

Before he was called to active duty, Elam was an assistant chaplain at the church on Fort Benning.

His fellow soldiers now say Elam is with God, because of all the good he did on Earth.

"Whatever I needed, he was alway there. He'd get chapel services set up, chairs set up. He said maam whatever you need, I will be there for you," said Capt. Renata Hannah, from 1207 U.S. Army Hospital.

Staff Sgt. Elam was buried at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church cemetery. He leaves behind a wife, and three daughters.
