Spending Bill Brings In Federal Dollars

December 21, 2007

Columbus (WTVM) -- Is it money for local growth, or holiday pork-barrel spending?  A big spending bill approved by Congress this week could spark a lively debate.

The proposal heading for President Bush's desk includes money for projects from coast to coast, including continued development of the riverfront in Phenix City. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Alabama, says $250,000 for an entertainment area will help the economy. He calls it his top Russell County project for this year.

We checked the 690 pages of projects online, and found the appropriations bill also has plenty of money for Columbus. Six million dollars is set aside for finishing the National Infantry Museum and Patriot Park near Fort Benning.  Another $750,000 will improve Talbotton Road. The city plans to widen all of that street to four lanes.

In addition, $500,000 is marked for Auburn University. It's for a new bioenergy research center.  But Georgia agriculture is not left out, as several hundreds of thousands are set aside for improving the state blueberry crop.  In Eufaula, $150,000 from the bill would renovate a building at Wallace Community College.
