Two friends merge two local churches

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Some people say the most segregated hour is 11:00 on Sunday morning.

But, Columbus pastors Vince Allen and Chris Mitchell are changing the face of Sunday morning worship by bringing together faces that aren't the same color.

"I think the talents and gifts and the abilities of both congregations and the energy that it brings as well as the obvious of racial barriers being dealt with," says Pastor Chris Mitchell.

"Chris and I have been friends for over 11 years. This merge was birthed out of our friendship number one and then the similarities of ministry we've had over the years," added Pastor Vince Allen.

Pastor Allen and his congregation had their own church at a location off Midtown Drive.

He says after much prayer, the church packed up and moved in with Pastor Mitchell and the Bethany Worship Center church family. The two churches joined together to make up what's being called The Bridge Church.

"That's what we're here to do. Obviously, the bridge between our two congregations. Our congregation being pro-dominantly African American and Bethany being pro-dominantly white. We're building a bridge between those two congregations, but we believe our goal is to build a bridge to our community," added Allen.

And now the 11:00 hour on Sunday morning is much different.

Different colors, cultures and backgrounds coming together to worship their God.

All stemmed from a friendship between two men.
