20 Year Old Dead After Shooting in LaGrange

LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) - LaGrange Police and Troup County Sheriff's deputies are on the look-out for suspects involved in an Saturday night shooting that left one young man dead.

News Leader Nine caught up with friends of the victim at the scene of the crime.

20 year-old Matthew Piper was shot Saturday night while walking along Mitchell Avenue in LaGrange. Witnesses, like neighbor Maddie Mae Holley, say they heard three shots and the sound of a car speeding off, "When I looked out the window my nephew said, "he's dead". So when I looked up he was laying straight out."

"I don't understand why somebody would do this," said Piper's friend Sarah Rice. "They saw him lying on the ground and he was shot three times: once in the throat, in the stomach and in the back."

Friends and family members gathered around the spot where he was found dead.

"I heard he was shot. There was no reason for anyone to shoot him," Mandie Camp, another friend of Piper's, told News Leader Nine.

Everyone who knew Matthew Piper agrees that he had no enemies.

"Nobody deserves to be punished like he was. He was too much of a good person," said Rice.

Holley added, "Very nice. I met him walking up and down the street. He was very friendly. He never bothered anyone that I knew of."

They just hope police can find the individuals responsible for putting an end to his short life.

"They need to get caught. He didn't deserve it. They took him out of our lives for no reason. He's too good of a person," Camp sobbed.

Police tell us the case is still under investigation at this time. Of course News Leader Nine will keep you updated on any developments in this story.
