COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - News Leader Nine has new information about the Phenix City man who killed himself just hours after being indicted for murder in Ohio.

The story first started unfolding Wednesday afternoon, when the Lee County Sheriff's Department went to serve Tommy Swint with the arrest warrant.

We now have new details about who Tommy Swint was and why the Alabama Bureau of Investigation is now involved.

Police say Tommy Swint took his life Wednesday afternoon just before he could be put under arrest for a 1991 murder.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones told News Leader Nine, "None of the law enforcement officer had entered the residence before they heard that round go off and when they went in they found Mr. Swint."

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation was called in by the Lee County Sheriff's department to investigate the shooting.

"Under the circumstances we want to make sure we cover all the eventual issues that may arise on our end of it and ensure everything is determined that it was self-inflicted," Jones added.

Swint is originally from LaFayette, Alabama and moved back to his hometown after leaving his position as a corrections officer in Trotwood, Ohio in 2007. But family members, including his brother Luther Swint, say he kept quiet about his past, "I don't know his life. I didn't know his past life or what he was going through or had gone through."

Then Luther got a call, telling him everything wasn't alright with Tommy and he had shot himself in the head. Luther Swint said, "I can't explain how I felt, but it's family and you never prepare for things like this."

The ABI's investigation into Tommy Swint's death is still on-going. As far as the 1991 murder case out of Ohio, officials are staying tight-lipped as to where that stands.

We know that Tommy's wife still lives in the Phenix City area. We tried contacting her for an interview, but she declined.
