Thousands of gallons of sewage seeps into Chattahoochee

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Monday was quite a mess for the Columbus Water Works.

1.75 million gallons of sewage discharged into Lake Oliver on the Chattahoochee River.

Officials say an excess in rainfall (5.5 inches) resulted in a sewer system overflow causing sewage and rain water to flow into the lake.

The Water Works says the sewage system is currently working properly and that actions to fix the problem comply with state and federal regulations.
