COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  The city's aggressive hiring of 100 new police officers has created the need for that many more cop cars.

Not to mention the department's need to replace old cars.

At today's council meeting, members voted to make an emergency purchase of 69 new Crown Victoria's from Allan Vigil Ford- a metro Atlanta dealership.

Those cars are expected to be delivered in a week.

The city will also take bids from local dealerships for another 100 cars.

On another not, Columbus is also revamping the Riverwalk.

Crews have been out removing dead trees and trash and repairing brick work but officials say more work needs to be done.

The City Manager's office says frequent flooding of the Riverwalk has caused extensive damage and over $450,000 dollars worth of improvements are still needed.

The City Manager's Office will present the list and costs of the additional improvements to the Budget Review Committee to see what can be funded.
