Police pursue leads in Opelika man's death

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - Opelika Police are investigating a murder that occurred Tuesday night in Opelika.

Police say around 7:50 p.m. they received an emergency call of shots fired in Bullock Court and Monroe Avenue.

On arrival, police found 53-year-old Levi Beard of Opelika lying in the street suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Beard was taken to the East Alabama Medical Center but was later pronounced dead around 8:30 p.m.

Police tell us, a short time later, a man arrived at the emergency room to be treated for a gunshot wound to the leg. That victim's name has not been released to the public.

Beard's body has been taken to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy. Police are treating the case as a homicide.

No other details about the case have been released, but police are pursuing several leads including a person of interest. 

The case remains under investigation by the Opelika Police, the Lee County Coroner, and the Alabama Dept. of Forensic Sciences.
