COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Clean up is underway in Columbus for the hundreds of residents hit hard by storms. Now the big question is what will insurance cover and when will it kick in?

Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine toured the damage and talked with residents about their options.

While it's still difficult to determine, Oxendine says from what he's seen in the air and on the ground, losses are in the millions.

"Just on the glance, I wouldn't be surprised if we're talking $20 million here in the Columbus area," explains Oxendine after looking at both commercial and residential damage, mainly in Uptown and Midtown Columbus.

Oxendine says there are a few steps consumers should take if they have property damage.

"You have an obligation to minimize future damage.  Gotta call your insurance company, document everything, don't touch anything, don't clean anything up until you have a good photographic journal."
