COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - We've got spirit, Columbus! The fountain city is now the new hot spot for cheering. The Spirit Town USA website holds an annual contest for the peppiest towns and this year Columbus made the top ten.

News Leader Nine caught up with some of the spirited folks in town who helped win us the title.

We see cheerleaders on the sidelines or on billboards around town, and Columbus is now the hot spot for hundreds of teens and kids that want to train to be the best.

Owner of United Cheerleading, Heath Perkins told News Leader Nine, "I would say 800 to a thousand will come here weekly for tumbling classes or All-Star or a school squad."

From ages 18 months to 18 years old, area cheerleading gyms appeal to all ages and skill levels.

"We have no boundaries in our program. We have special needs programs, and all the way from level 1 to level 5," said Perkins.

The number of cheerleaders, plus the advanced skill levels, places Columbus among the top in the nation for spirit.

Gym Director for ACE Cheerleading, Lorenzo Scott added, "I think what it's done for this area is make the idea of being a cheerleader more available."

Perkins agreed, "Hopefully getting recognition from a national level. Folks recognize our program and the high school, middle school and All-Stars and the athletes that come from Columbus, Georgia."

If you still see cheerleaders as just girls on the sidelines, this honor should make you reevaluate what you think.

Scott said, "It's a very competitive sport but you get so much out of it."

And Perkins is proud of the city's title, "We put ourselves on the map as making an impact on the industry."

If seeing all these cheerleaders in action got you wanting to join the crowd, your chance is coming up. ACE Cheerleading has try-outs on Sunday, May 3rd at their location on River Road.

And May 8th and 9th you'll have the chance to try-out for United Cheerleading located on Knology Way.
