Happy Mother's Day to some special women

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - In our job, we meet wonderful mothers almost every day, and we thought that since it's Mother's Day, now's the best time to recognize them. News Leader Nine put together a compilation of some of the courageous moms that have made the news recently.

Mothers are a huge part of everyone's lives and News Leader Nine wanted to recognize some of the mothers we have talked to in the past year that we think deserve a "Happy Mother's Day".

Some moms are thankful they get to spend this day with their children. Mothers like Miki Parker, who stood by her daughter Carly's side while she fought and eventually beat cancer at the young age of 8 years old.

And Michele Johnson who dropped everything to nurse her daughter Maegan back to health after a ruptured brain aneurysm.

But some mothers are spending their first Mother's Day without their children. Diedre Zalunardo watched her son suffer from a brain tumor, and sadly, Josh's life was cut short.

Cherrie Piper, the mother of Matthew Piper who was shot early this year in LaGrange, is learning what it's like to live without a child.

We also want to say Happy Mother's Day to Willene Holmes, the grandmother of murder victim Tiffany Folmar, Judy Newton, who's son Randy was killed in 2007, Teresa Woodall, the mother of Crystal Bailey, and Agena Battle who has faced the unimaginable when her boyfriend killed her three young children then took his own life.

All these women have shown incredible strength in the face of tragedy, and News Leader Nine wants to recognize them. So to every mother out there: Happy Mother's Day from all of us!

And of course we couldn't end this story without a huge thank you to the women who brought us into the world, our moms. A big happy Mother's Day to Meteorologist Derek Kinkade's mom, Dottie, our reporter Taylor Barnhill's moms, Beth Hinton and Sharon Barnhill. Happy Mother's Day to sports reporter Bethany Culbreth's mom, Suzanne. And happy Mother's Day to Andrew's mom, Sharon Wittenberg.
