RUSSELL COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -  Despite Saturday's rainy weather, hundreds of folks came out to Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, finding the true meaning of the Memorial Day weekend.

More than 200 volunteers placed 7,000 flags and flowers on the graves of veterans.

Fort Benning soldiers, local high school students and area families took part in the project.

"The freedom that we have today is because of the sacrifices of the veterans and their families and it's just real important that we remember them in these types of ceremonies," said Director James Sanders.

The cemetery will hold its Memorial Day ceremony Sunday, May 24th at 2 PM eastern time.

The event is free and open to the public.
