Columbus swimming pools open for business

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Memorial Day may be the unoffical start of summer, but today, the city of Columbus opened its swimming pools for the season.

For the kids, opening day at the pool means being released from behind the bars of dry land for the summer.

Moms like Jennifer Ricker are helping these young fish find their fins.

"We're signed up for swim lessons this summer. My daughter is about to turn three, so we're hoping to get her signed for lessons here and then at the YMCA," Ricker said.

It's also the first day for a new group of lifeguards.

Despite an overcast morning, Kim Fillers is making sure the crew is on top of their game, in case the sun breaks through for the first time in a week.

It seems mother nature may keep the crowds at home.

"This is really shocking, generally, we would have about 100 people lined up outside, but I'm guessing the weather is keeping them inside right now," Fillers said.

At high noon, the clouds part and and this pool is officially open for business...at least partly.

New drains at the bottom of the pool mean the slides and sprayers won't work, until the pool manufacturer can get out to fix it.

"They're on their way, it's either going to happen today or early tomorrow," Fillers said.

And there's a forecast of sunshine this weekend, which might be the best news of all.

Crowds were down a bit on opening day...but there is still plenty of summer ahead for the kids to get their sea legs.

Columbus City Public Swimming Pools Hours:

Wednesday - Friday:  12:00pm - 6:00pm

Saturday - Sunday:  11:00am - 7:30pm
