Training for a New Trade

OPELIKA, AL (WXTX) - Traumatic, is how one career counselor describes a massive layoff like the one at BF Goodrich in Opelika. Now, state and local agencies are working to ease the pain for the one thousand East Alabama workers who will soon be out of a job.

More than 100 Goodrich workers attended the morning session of Wednesday's "Retrain/Retool/Re-Employ Expo" at Southern Union State Community College's Opelika campus. More are expected to show up for the morning and afternoon sessions on Thursday.

The Expo brings together multiple state agencies and area community colleges to assist workers in finding new jobs and obtaining additional training and education necessary for new careers. The Governor's Office of Workforce Development, sponsored the three day employment expo that focuses on unemployment benefits, educational opportunities as well as putting these workers...back to work.

Hundreds of BF goodrich workers have sat down at these computers to learn how to use the internet to search for jobs and how to draft a resume, something many haven't had to do in years. The one on one help was appreciated.
