PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -- The Larry Mims Tennis Foundation is hosting the 4th Annual Tennis Benefit June 4-7 at the Cliff Farrar Tennis Facility in Phenix City, AL. This Benefit has now grown to include over 100 players from an ever-growing region; this year's participants include several from Auburn, Eufaula and Montgomery, and also from Chattanooga, TN.
Larry Mims, a pillar in the local tennis community, passed away much too early from heart disease in 2006. Larry's particular passion was helping children develop their tennis skills - skills that he believed would serve them well throughout their lifetime. Larry's philosophy was that a combination of physical fitness and an understanding of the tennis rules and courtesies would be applicable to any situation. To honor his memory a group of former students and friends got together and held a tennis benefit to raise money to support the American Heart Association's work. The tournament was so popular that the students and friends formed a committee to host an annual tournament. Each event was more successful than the previous so in 2008 the Larry Mims Tennis Committee formed the Larry Mims Tennis Foundation and earmarked a portion of the proceeds for the American Heart Association and to carry on Larry's work by helping children in the local area learn about and play tennis.
