Need to Recycle an Old TV?

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - If the Big Switch to digital has you switching televisions all together, no need for that old one to just sit around or go to waste.

Best Buy offers a recycling program that consumers can take advantage of.

"We actually just started our, a program at the beginning of this year where we allow customers to bring in old tube style tvs or any old tv they have, and we actually send them off to our service center, where they dismantle them and properly dispose of the pieces," says Best Buy's Charlie Hill.

What do you have to do?

"Just really bring it to our front door, we'll take it to customer service and there actually is a $10 fee for anything with a tube, or a screen on it, but what we'll do is, we'll give you a $10 gift certificate to Best Buy for doing that," explains Hill.

If you buy a new tv, Best Buy also offers free haul away after they install it, H.H. Gregg has a similar policy.

Another option is to donate your old tv.  The folks at Goodwill can take it, and your trash ends up as someone else's treasure.

"As long as they're working and in order, we take any tvs, any analog tvs at all we just check them out and be sure they're working and put them of the sales floor," says Goodwill Store Manager Ken Jones.

Goodwill even places a courtesy notice on the tvs to let customers know it's analog and they may need a converter box.
