COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM)-- More information is being released in the case of a double shooting from Wednesday night on Gettysburg Way in Columbus.

The incident in the Bunker Hill subdivision left a resident dead and a Sheriff's deputy injured.

Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr says it was Darrick Brockington,40, that brought authorities to the location.

Brockington appeared in Municipal Court Friday morning and plead not guilty to two counts of selling marijuana.

Sheriff Darr tells WTVM, a confidential informant bought marijuana from him on two separate occasions.

Investigators revealed in court that they have audio recordings of Brockington selling drugs to the informant at a secure location on May 19th and June 4th.

When deputies went to his father's house to arrest him and search for drugs this week, both men were home.

The Sheriff says as soon as officers got inside, shots rang out.

Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation say the father, 66-year-old Leroy Brockington fired first, hitting one of the deputies. His partner fired back at the elder Brockington- the shot was fatal.

Sheriff's Deputy David Batastini was hit in the hip. He was taken to the Medical Center where he was treated and released.

His partner, Tyler Findley, who fired the shot that killed Leroy Brockington, wasn't injured in the exchange.

The initial target of the operation, Darrick Brockington, wasn't injured either but he was arrested.

Officials couldn't say today if drugs were found in the home but we do know neither Darrick nor his father have prior drug offenses in state or Superior Court, only adding to neighbors surprise.

"He's a good guy and I know him. Darrick too- he's a good guy. For something like this to happen in our community is bad. There's a lot of eyebrows being raised," Phillip Lester, a neighbor, said.

"It's very shocking for something like that to happen right in our neighborhood and you know the folks for years and know them to be law-abiding citizens. Then all of a sudden this happens and it's a real tragedy," said neighbor Daniel Lester.

Leroy Brockington's body has been sent to the state crime lab in Atlanta.

Darrick Brockington's case has been bound over to Superior Court.

Judge Stephen Hyles granted him a bond of $5,000 on each count.

A separate entity, the GBI, continues to investigate the incident and WTVM will continue to bring you the latest as information becomes available.
