Columbus To Buy Homes in Flood Areas

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - City Manager Isaiah Hugley announced plans to acquire several flood prone properties around the city at Tuesday's city council meeting.

The homes include one on Englewood Drive, and four on Califon Court.

The city was supposed to buy up the homes on Califon Court 20 years ago, but the deal never went through.

Appraisers are set to come out and determine the value of these homes, then the city will negotiate with these homeowners on a final price.

The city is also moving forward with mailing out flood checks to residents around the city eligible for the one-time grant program to cover flood damages.

In addition, the city is commissioning several studies in flood prone areas, costing $1.5 million.

The studies will help the city identify problems and find solutions so this year's flooding will not be repeated.
