BARBOUR COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -  A Barbour County man is dead after falling out of a tree in his yard.

Officials say 66-year-old Gene Creighton climbed a tree to cut down a branch at his home in Comer, Alabama Monday.

Creighton was wearing a safety harness and when he cut the branch with his chainsaw, he also cut the rope attached to his harness, sending him 20 feet to the ground below.

At the scene, Creighton reportedly told emergency responders he lost his balance when he mistakenly cut the harness rope.

He was taken to the hospital alive but later passed away from internal injuries.

The Barbour County Coroner says the incident was an accident.
