Serial number links theft to Phenix City man

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany Police recovered a seven thousand dollar lawnmower and trailer just hours after it was stolen, because the owner had the serial numbers for the equipment.  

The expensive machine was stolen from a Trenton Lane home Thursday. Less than four hours later Phenix City, Alabama, police arrested Michael Peaster trying to pawn the equipment at a pawn shop.

Investigators say he drove to Albany, stole the trailer and mower, and went back to pawn it. Because the serial number was reported stolen, Peaster was arrested. 

"The serial number is the only reason we could link it back to the city of Albany," said Albany Police Detective Tim Harvey. "Otherwise it would just be another lawnmower that was recovered and nobody would have known where it came from."

Police urge you to write down the serial numbers for your valuables like lawn mowers, TV's, and computers. If they are stolen that is your best chance of getting them back.

    Fire crews responded to a fire at a residence on Washington Avenue Wednesday morning.  According to Fire Chief Ricky Shores, four units burned, which displaced four families. The families were home at the time of the fire, but no one was injured.
