COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  "It's hot!"

"There's a lot of hot, hot, hot heat going on out here."

From hand-held fans, to snow cones, to ice packs, we caught folks doing everything they could to fight the heat at Family Day in the Park Saturday.

Organizers say the soaring temps may have kept some families home this year but thousands still came out for the event, now in its 23rd year.

And besides the heat, folks noticed something else that was obvious- lots of local cops.

"We have a strong presence, a very strong presence and we have extra officers stationed throughout the crowd to watch out and make sure this is a safe event. That way, every one can come out and have fun without any incidents," said Sergeant Warren Dunlap.

Police say things went pretty smoothly this year, enabling families to enjoy a day designed just for them.

"It gives us a chance to give back to our listeners and the community and get the families together. With the recession going on, so many people are looking for things they can do for free with their families and this is definitely an opportunity for them to do that. People look forward to coming out to Family Day in the Park every year and it fulfills us to keep doing it for them," said Vicky James of Foxie 105.
