PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - Police say a 16-year-old girl is still in the hospital after an accident that left her with a broken jaw and collapsed lung.

The girl was a passenger in a car that crashed into a utility pole on Lonesome Pine Road.

The driver, 19-year-old Ulysses Upshaw Jr. has been arrested and charged with assault.

Police say Upshaw was speeding when he lost control of his car and crashed into the pole, ejecting the teenage passenger.

Police suspect alcohol and drugs may have also contributed to the accident.

Upshaw's case should go to Russell County District Court in the next few months.

He received minor injuries in the crash. Another female passenger suffered a broken leg.
