Opelika police search for attempted murder suspect

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - Opelika police are looking for a man who may have attacked his soon to be ex-wife and her male friend. The woman was stabbed more than 15 times, her friend at least twice.

Monday night around 11, Opelika Investigators say this man, 26-year old Charles Ledbetter was waiting inside his soon to be ex-wife's apartment at the Ski Lodge Apartment Complex off 280. Police say when Ledbetter's wife and her 24 year old male friend came home, the three got into an argument. Detectives say that's when Ledbetter took out a knife and started stabbing.

"The female victim was stabbed anywhere between 15 and 20 times in her back and left arm. One of her stab wounds actually punched her left lung. The male victim was stabbed in his left shoulder," said Opelika Police, Captain Allan Elkins.

Ledbetter's 27-year old wife is recovering in a secured area at a local hospital.

Her condition is unknown. The man has been treated and released.

Meanwhile the search continues for the 26-year old Auburn man, who faces attempted murder, assault and burglary charges. While Ledbetter is still at large, police do not believe the public is in danger.

"This is domestic violence related there is no indication he is on a rampage going around assaulting people," said Elkins.

Detectives do not know if Ledbetter is still in the East Alabama area or if he's on the run.

Opelika police are working with other agencies to find Ledbetter and arrest him.
