GBI Investigates Americus Murder

AMERICUS, GA (WXTX) -  A family get-together Sunday night happened to be the last time 46-year-old Dorothy Sheffield was seen alive.

People close to her started to worry Monday morning, when the local day care owner and mother of two was no where to be found.

"She ran a day care out of her home, and investigators were told when parents arrived Monday morning, Mrs. Sheffield did not answer her cell phone and didn't come to the door, which was unusual for her," said GBI Special Agent Trebor Randle, who is in charge of the investigation.

Throughout the day, family members tried to make contact, but unable to reach her on the phone, they finally went to her home on Magnolia Street.

"One of the family members went into her house, walked into the bathroom and found her deceased," said Special Agent Randle.

Because of the trauma to her body, agents say Sheffield was murdered.

Right now, there are no official suspects, but more clues are starting to emerge as the investigation continues.

"One of the things we discovered was her vehicle, which was located across town, and we do have a witness who observed an individual coming out of Sheffield's car," said Special Agent Randle.

Agents are currently looking for that person, just wanted for questioning at this point, but it's believed they knew Sheffield personally.

Even though several areas of the body had trauma, GBI agents still don't know how Sheffield died.

Her autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday in Atlanta.

If you have any information on the crime, you are asked to call Americus Police... the number is 229-924-3677.
