PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -  A Russell County utilities officer found remnants of a meth lab in a dumpster near Skylark Drive in Phenix City.

It was on a residential street off Ladonia Drive, just a short ways from Highway 80.

The officer pulled a black duffel bag out of the dumpster and it started smoking. He also noticed a tube sticking out of the bag and immediately contacted narcotics agents.

"Typically, I think a lot of times, people who are cooking and using meth labs, they do try to burn the remnants of the lab on their property so people don't find and see things in the trash. It is unusual that we would find it in a dumpster in a bag still all together," said Lieutenant Heath Taylor, investigator with the Russell County Sheriff's Department.

A hazardous waste team was called in to clean up the chemicals.

Russell County investigators are working to track down where the lab came from.
