A growing number of elderly relying on gov. for food

RUSSELL COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - Whether it's the recession or just the graying of America -- a growing number of senior citizens are relying on government programs to help put food on the table.

"There is a need within our community to help feed the people, because so many times you hear your government should be able to take care of all the seniors and all their needs but we can't, " said Jackie Pinkard, Area Agency on Aging.

The area agency on aging in Lee and Russell counties in Alabama serve about 180 seniors, but organizers say they have a waiting list of more than 200 people.
