MONTGOMERY, AL (WTVM) -  New figures released Friday show Alabama's unemployment rate rose to 10.1% for June, numbers state officials say are a reflection of the national economy. .

That's up from 9.8% in May.

It's also higher than the national rate of 9.5% for June.

That number represents more than 200, 000 people, some of whom we caught up with at Opelika's Career Center.

"Right now, things have been kind of hard and it's hard to find a job because places are closing down so right now, I'm in here trying to find a job," said Nesha Howard, a single mom.

In response to the increase, the Department of Industrial Relations is adding staff at its call centers.

The new employees will help take initial claims.

Numbers show the county with the lowest unemployment rate is Shelby while the county with the highest rate is Wilcox at 24.4%.

Officials with the Department of Industrial Relations say historically there are higher unemployment numbers in the summer months but there is some good news to report.

"There is some silver lining as far as the economy. We've seen a pick up in jobs in the last month in construction. We've seen it in our hospitality and tourism jobs. We've seen those pick up as they do in the summer," said Tom Surtees, the Department's Director.
