COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus police are investigating an early morning shooting that left  a Phenix City man dead.

Sunday -- around 1:00 a.m.,  police got a call for shots fired at the Main Street apartments off Whittlesey Road, near Columbus Park Crossing.

When they arrived on the scene, they didn't find a body.

Twenty-four-year-old Maurice Hollis -- of Phenix City -- had already been taken to Saint Francis Hospital.

Hollis was suffering from a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Columbus Police arrested three men in connection with his death - 25-year-old Carlos Brown, 33-year-old Kubiat Keperikpe, and 23-year-old Clarence Mahone.

Police say it was a robbery gone wrong.  We're told Hollis, Ekperikpe, and Brown, approached Clarence Mahone in the stairwell of his apartment building to rob him.

Afterwards, there appeared to be a gunfight which ended with Hollis, one of the attempted robbery suspects, with a gun wound to the head.

Mahone, Brown, and Ekperikpe are charged with murder. They are expected to appear in Recorder's Court Tuesday morning.
