COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  It is one of the most heavily traveled roads in Columbus and thanks to a partnership between Columbus Bank and Trust and the city, Buena Vista Road will soon feature a very unique building.

"CB&T will break ground on a new combined East Columbus Banking Center as well as an East Columbus Precinct for the Columbus Police Department," said Billy Blanchard, Executive Vice President of Retail Banking for CB&T.

At a press conference Tuesday, CB&T, the city and police department revealed they're building a new facility near the Buena Vista Road Walmart- part of it will be a bank and part of it will be a police precinct.

It's one of two new precincts the police department is building as 100 new officers are added to the force. The other will be near Williams Road and Veteran's Parkway on the north side. Officials say the posts will allow blue and whites to hit the streets faster.

"By manning these precincts 24 hours a day, seven days a week, it will afford us the opportunity for a higher officer presence in our neighborhoods as well as area businesses and also decrease the response time for the officers as they're responding to the 911 calls," explained COlumbus Police Chief Ricky Boren.

CB&T is charging the city one dollar a year in rent- a fee the Mayor gladly paid up front.

The bank says it won't be using any public funds for the project.

"We think that will make the community a safer place to have police coming and going from that location," said CB&T President and CEO Steve Melton.

"I think first of all, you have to have good safety and I think we're well on our way to that," added Columbus Mayor Jim Wetherington.

The bank is consolidating its branches on Saint Mary's Road and Forest Road with the new location on Buena Vista Road. No jobs are being lost in the process.

Between 25 and 30 police officers will staff the new precinct and 12 CB&T employees will work at the new branch.

CB&T hopes to break ground sometime next month.

The new bank and precinct is set to open in April of next year.
