COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - It has been exactly one month since the ribbon cutting at the National Infantry Museum near Ft. Benning and News Leader Nine wanted to see how things are going. So we sat down with the museum's organizer to see how attendance and revenue have held up this past month.

One month after its grand opening, officials with the National Infantry Museum couldn't be happier about the outcome.

"We're having a lot of fun. Things have been successful," Major General Jerry White told News Leader Nine.

He says so far this summer, attendance has been up, "We're very pleased with the visitation. Right now we've exceeded our 50,000 visitors. We've had about 55,000 in here so far last month and that's good news."

White said the museum is averaging $1,800 per day on special exhibits from those visitors, "Right now we're in the vicinity of 600,000 a year, which exceeds our expectations. That might taper off when school starts, but right now with graduation on Thursday and Friday. You get a large crowd then. Family Day on Wednesday, and the weekends have been really good."

Major General White says if your family is looking for fun, come out on Mondays or Tuesdays, when its less crowded, "I would invite people to come down and enjoy themselves, spend the day. Go to the museum, go to the restaurant, go to the I-Max and just have a good time."

If you want to plan a trip for your family to the National Infantry Museum, the hours of operation are 9 to 5, Monday through Saturday and 11 to 5 on Sunday. The I-MAX theater is currently showing Star Trek, and you can check the museum for show times.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
